Steel chains running through my heart
It’s a long wind down
Wrap it around and squeeze it ’til
No blood leaves
Let it pump as hard as it can beat
As a child, I would dream
Of sage and flight,
And of water pure and cool
In midday summer light.
Razor eyes peering through my soul
This lie won’t last
Fire lighting her words as they
Speak right past
This cobbled wall crumbling into mud
As a teen, I would gaze
Into a mirrored hourglass
Wholly drained and replaced
With old letters to forgotten loves
Cellophane wrapped around my heart
It’s a high rise life
Wrap it around a few times more
Keep it dry
Let it pump as hard as it can beat
Let us lie on the bed
Where we should never be
Take me away from the sights and sounds,
Where I’ve made a mess of things
Bourbon eyes peering for a drink
This night won’t last
Fire lighting her words as they
Share her past
In stories that I’ll never hear again
Hold me down, there’s a flame alive
That I can not describe
I promise you, I tried to quell,
But I’ll never let it subside
Planted in her soul are the seeds
Of what she’ll reap
And in perception of the answer,
end; we sleep.
I can not take with me what I can not keep.
I’m going far away, so far away
As I’ve ever been from here
And I’ve seen not what my eyes
Betray me each and every day
